Au Pair / Nanny (After-School Care)

Steady household work in a family home in Newcastle, with clear days and hours agreed upfront. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

The work is in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, so you'll need a reliable way to get there every day. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Keep a list of cleaning supplies running low for the employer
• Help an elderly person with meals, medication reminders and light walking
• Clean bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and living areas on a weekly rotation
• Wash, hang, iron and fold the household's laundry
• Get children ready for school and supervise homework in the afternoon
• Clean windows and patio doors once a week

• Able to handle a full-day physical routine
• Good with children and patient
• South African ID or valid work permit
• Neat, organised and able to work without being supervised
• Able to speak and understand basic English

• Experience caring for an older person
• Non-smoker
• A driver's licence for school lifts

• Paid annual leave and public holidays as the law requires
• Written contract with fixed hours and duties
• Registered for UIF and COIDA by the employer

• Families hire on trust, so make references your strongest part. Write the employer's name, suburb, years worked and phone number for each one.
• Say plainly what you can and cannot do: cooking, ironing, childcare, driving. It avoids arguments later and families like honesty.
