Boilermaker (Structural Steel Fabrication)

Strong welding and plate work for the petrochemical shutdown contractor in Secunda, with real drawings and real tolerances. It suits someone who likes knowing exactly what a good day's work looks like.

You'll report in Secunda. Relocation is not covered for this one. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Prepare joints for radiographic and dye penetrant testing
• Follow the welding procedure specification for every joint you weld
• Grind and repair welds flagged by the QC inspector
• Fit up beams, columns and bracing with the correct gaps and alignment
• Set up MIG and flux-cored machines for long production runs
• Cut and bevel plate with oxy-fuel, plasma and a bevelling machine
• Read fabrication drawings and cutting lists before you mark out plate

• Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification
• Willing to work shutdowns, long shifts and weekends when the plant is down
• Valid welder coding to ISO 9606-1 or ASME IX in the processes the job needs
• Medical fitness certificate for industrial sites, or willing to get one
• At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying

• Rigging or crane signalling certificate
• Experience on structural work to AWS D1.1
• Duplex or chrome-moly welding experience

• Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied
• Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns
• Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home
• Coding renewals paid by the employer

• List each coding separately with the standard, process, position and expiry date. "Coded welder" on its own tells a recruiter nothing.
• Expect a practical welding test on the first day. Bring your own gloves and chipping hammer so you feel at home.
