Boilermaker (Structural Steel Fabrication) – Permanent

You'll cut, fit and weld steel to drawing in a busy trailer and truck body builder in Soweto. It suits someone who likes knowing exactly what a good day's work looks like.

Home base is a trailer and truck body builder on the Soweto side of Gauteng.

• Sign off your weld map and traceability sheets for each spool
• Fit up beams, columns and bracing with the correct gaps and alignment
• Grind and repair welds flagged by the QC inspector
• Keep a hot work permit open and a fire watch in place during shutdowns
• Weld carbon steel pipe in the 6G position using GTAW root and SMAW fill
• Cut and bevel plate with oxy-fuel, plasma and a bevelling machine

• You can read fabrication and isometric drawings without help
• Valid welder coding to ISO 9606-1 or ASME IX in the processes the job needs
• At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying
• Medical fitness certificate for industrial sites, or willing to get one

• SAIW welding inspector course, even at Level 1
• Experience on structural work to AWS D1.1
• Orbital or automatic welding experience

• Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home
• Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns
• Coding renewals paid by the employer

• Expect a practical welding test on the first day. Bring your own gloves and chipping hammer so you feel at home.
• If you have worked shutdowns, name the type of plant, like refinery or sugar mill. It proves you know the site rules.
