Boilermaker-Welder (Plant Shutdowns)

The petrochemical shutdown contractor in East London needs a coded welder who can hold a WPS and deliver clean, sound joints. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

This post is East London-based, with most of your time spent at a petrochemical shutdown contractor. Weekend work is on a roster, so you won't be on every weekend.

• Roll and form plate for tanks, chutes and hoppers
• Fit up beams, columns and bracing with the correct gaps and alignment
• Grind and repair welds flagged by the QC inspector
• Weld carbon steel pipe in the 6G position using GTAW root and SMAW fill
• Keep a hot work permit open and a fire watch in place during shutdowns
• Prepare joints for radiographic and dye penetrant testing

• You can read fabrication and isometric drawings without help
• Valid welder coding to ISO 9606-1 or ASME IX in the processes the job needs
• Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification
• At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying

• Rigging or crane signalling certificate
• Experience on structural work to AWS D1.1
• SAIW welding inspector course, even at Level 1

• Coding renewals paid by the employer
• Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied
• Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home

• List each coding separately with the standard, process, position and expiry date. "Coded welder" on its own tells a recruiter nothing.
• Expect a practical welding test on the first day. Bring your own gloves and chipping hammer so you feel at home.
