Job Description

A labour law practice in Bellville has space for a law graduate ready to start practical vocational training. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

The site is in Bellville; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. There's a probation period of three months before the contract is confirmed.

What you'll actually do

  • Research case law and legislation on SAFLII and Juta or LexisNexis
  • Take instructions from clients and write clear attendance notes
  • Appear in the magistrate's court on postponements and unopposed matters
  • Issue and serve documents at the magistrate's court and High Court
  • Prepare trial bundles and discovery affidavits
  • Keep matter files updated and diarise court dates and deadlines
  • Record your time on the practice management system every day

You'll need

  • Code B driver's licence and a reliable car for court runs
  • Proficient in Word, Outlook and legal research databases
  • LLB degree from a South African university
  • Willing to work late before trials and filing deadlines

Nice if you have

  • Completed PLT (Practical Legal Training) at a law school
  • Second official language used by the firm's clients

On offer

  • Paid PLT course fees at some firms
  • Study leave for board exams
  • Travel allowance for court runs

Applying, step by step

  1. Check you meet the must-haves first; recruiters filter on those before anything else.
  2. Have the following on hand (clear photos on your phone are fine at first): recent police clearance certificate plus short writing sample, such as a legal opinion or memorandum.
  3. Use the form on this page. It takes about two minutes and you don't need to upload anything yet.
  4. Keep your phone on. Shortlisted applicants are contacted by call, SMS or WhatsApp within 9 working days.
