Candidate Attorney (Family Law)

You'll do your articles at a small general practice law firm in Cape Town CBD and learn the practice from the ground up. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

The work is in Cape Town CBD, Western Cape, so you'll need a reliable way to get there every day. You'll start with a short induction before working on your own.

• Study for the LPC competency-based examinations alongside the work
• Issue and serve documents at the magistrate's court and High Court
• Draft letters of demand, summonses and particulars of claim
• Prepare affidavits and notices of motion for your principal to review
• Keep matter files updated and diarise court dates and deadlines

• Code B driver's licence and a reliable car for court runs
• Proficient in Word, Outlook and legal research databases
• Clear criminal record, as required for admission
• LLB degree from a South African university
• Good legal research and clear written English

• Completed PLT (Practical Legal Training) at a law school
• Second official language used by the firm's clients
• Vacation work at a law firm

• Paid PLT course fees at some firms
• Mentorship from an experienced principal
• Travel allowance for court runs

• Attach a short legal writing sample; firms judge candidates heavily on drafting.
• Say which area of law you want and why in two lines; generic cover letters rarely get shortlisted.
