Candidate Attorney (Second Year of Articles)

You'll do your articles at a labour law practice in Germiston and learn the practice from the ground up. Bring a calm head on busy days and you'll be fine.

The site is in Germiston; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. You'll start with a short induction before working on your own.

• Attend court with counsel and take notes during trials
• Issue and serve documents at the magistrate's court and High Court
• Draft letters of demand, summonses and particulars of claim
• Appear in the magistrate's court on postponements and unopposed matters
• Prepare affidavits and notices of motion for your principal to review
• Keep matter files updated and diarise court dates and deadlines
• Research case law and legislation on SAFLII and Juta or LexisNexis

• LLB degree from a South African university
• Code B driver's licence and a reliable car for court runs
• Ready to sign a practical vocational training contract registered with the LPC
• Willing to work late before trials and filing deadlines

• Vacation work at a law firm
• Completed PLT (Practical Legal Training) at a law school

• Mentorship from an experienced principal
• Paid PLT course fees at some firms
• Study leave for board exams

• Attach a short legal writing sample; firms judge candidates heavily on drafting.
• Put your LLB, university and graduation year at the top, and your average mark if it's above 65%.
