Candidate Attorney (Second Year of Articles) – Permanent

You'll do your articles at a legal aid office in Gqeberha and learn the practice from the ground up. It's a practical job: you'll see what you got done before you go home.

This post is in Gqeberha (Eastern Cape). Please only apply if you can travel there daily. You'll start with a short induction before working on your own.

• Draft letters of demand, summonses and particulars of claim
• Take instructions from clients and write clear attendance notes
• Prepare trial bundles and discovery affidavits
• Record your time on the practice management system every day
• Keep matter files updated and diarise court dates and deadlines
• Research case law and legislation on SAFLII and Juta or LexisNexis
• Study for the LPC competency-based examinations alongside the work

• LLB degree from a South African university
• Proficient in Word, Outlook and legal research databases
• Good legal research and clear written English
• Code B driver's licence and a reliable car for court runs
• Clear criminal record, as required for admission
• Ready to sign a practical vocational training contract registered with the LPC

• Mentorship from an experienced principal
• Study leave for board exams
• Travel allowance for court runs

• Apply early in the year, as most firms fill articles from January to March.
• Say which area of law you want and why in two lines; generic cover letters rarely get shortlisted.
