Civil Labourer (Road Works) – Entry Level

You'll mix, carry, dig and clean up so the tradespeople on a low-cost housing development in East London can keep building. You'll work with a small crew, so being easy to work with matters as much as skill.

You'll be based at a low-cost housing development in East London. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Help offload deliveries of steel, timber and pipes
• Compact soil and layer bedding sand with a plate compactor
• Sign the daily safety talk register before work starts
• Clear rubble and load it into skips
• Pass tools and materials to the plumber or electrician as needed

• A clean record is preferred for some government sites
• Able to follow instructions from a foreman or artisan
• Physically strong and fit for outdoor work in all weather
• You take safety rules seriously and wear full PPE
• Grade 8 or higher

• Some experience with a jackhammer, grinder or plate compactor
• Registered on your ward or municipal job-seeker database
• Previous site work you can show with a reference

• Boots, hard hat and overalls issued on site
• Learn from artisans with a chance to move up to assistant
• Paid weekly or fortnightly

• If a foreman can vouch for you, put their number on your CV. Site hiring runs on word of mouth.
• List past sites by name and what you did there, like "mixed concrete, laid kerbs". It proves you have done real site work.
