Coded Welder (6G, ASME IX) – Immediate Start

Strong welding and plate work for the petrochemical shutdown contractor in Pretoria West, with real drawings and real tolerances. If you like clear targets and knowing where you stand, this is for you.

The site is in Pretoria West; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. Start is planned for the beginning of next month.

• Cut and bevel plate with oxy-fuel, plasma and a bevelling machine
• Weld carbon steel pipe in the 6G position using GTAW root and SMAW fill
• Set up MIG and flux-cored machines for long production runs
• Roll and form plate for tanks, chutes and hoppers
• Follow the welding procedure specification for every joint you weld
• Grind and repair welds flagged by the QC inspector
• Prepare joints for radiographic and dye penetrant testing

• At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying
• Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification
• Willing to work shutdowns, long shifts and weekends when the plant is down
• You can read fabrication and isometric drawings without help
• Steady hands and good eyesight, with or without glasses
• Medical fitness certificate for industrial sites, or willing to get one

• Orbital or automatic welding experience
• Experience on structural work to AWS D1.1
• SAIW welding inspector course, even at Level 1

• Coding renewals paid by the employer
• Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied
• Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns

• Expect a practical welding test on the first day. Bring your own gloves and chipping hammer so you feel at home.
• Expired codings are the number one reason welders are turned away at the gate. Check dates before you apply.
