Coded Welder (6G, ASME IX)

You'll cut, fit and weld steel to drawing in a busy petrochemical shutdown contractor in Umhlanga. It's a practical job: you'll see what you got done before you go home.

Home base is a petrochemical shutdown contractor on the Umhlanga side of KwaZulu-Natal. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Follow the welding procedure specification for every joint you weld
• Read fabrication drawings and cutting lists before you mark out plate
• Roll and form plate for tanks, chutes and hoppers
• Keep a hot work permit open and a fire watch in place during shutdowns
• Weld carbon steel pipe in the 6G position using GTAW root and SMAW fill

• Steady hands and good eyesight, with or without glasses
• At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying
• Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification
• Willing to work shutdowns, long shifts and weekends when the plant is down

• Orbital or automatic welding experience
• Duplex or chrome-moly welding experience

• Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home
• Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied
• Coding renewals paid by the employer
• Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns

• List each coding separately with the standard, process, position and expiry date. "Coded welder" on its own tells a recruiter nothing.
• If you have worked shutdowns, name the type of plant, like refinery or sugar mill. It proves you know the site rules.
