Construction Worker (Bricklaying Assistant)

Put your trade to work on the school construction project in Potchefstroom, with steady work for the length of the project. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

This post is Potchefstroom-based, with most of your time spent at a school construction project.

• Wear your hard hat, boots and harness wherever the foreman says
• Lay paving on a compacted, levelled bedding sand layer
• Prime and paint walls, ceilings and woodwork in two or three coats
• Carry bricks and materials to the workface and keep the scaffold clear
• Lay face brick and plaster brick to line, level and plumb
• Cut, bend and tie reinforcing steel to the bending schedule
• Fix roof trusses, purlins and brandering for ceilings

• Proven experience in at least one trade, shown by references or a practical test
• Willing to move between sites in the same city
• Punctual every morning, even in winter
• Understands basic site safety like scaffolds and open trenches
• Safety boots of your own for the first week, if possible
• Able to follow a foreman's instructions and read basic measurements

• PPE supplied: hard hat, gloves, reflective vest
• UIF and COIDA registration from day one
• Weekly or fortnightly pay, always on time
• Transport from a pick-up point to site

• Say which trade you are strongest in first. "Bricklayer, 6 years, face brick" is better than "general construction".
• Bring photos of your work on your phone. A foreman believes a straight wall more than a long CV.
