Debt Collector (Legal Book)

You'll phone customers who have fallen behind and agree payment plans they can actually keep. Good for someone who wants to build a solid track record they can put on their CV.

You'll be based at a debt collection agency in George. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps.

• Send written arrangements by SMS or email straight after each call.
• Track broken promises-to-pay and follow up within 48 hours.
• Report daily on rands collected, contacts made and arrangements set.
• Negotiate payment arrangements and set up DebiCheck mandates.
• Answer disputes about balances, interest and fees with a printed statement.
• Hand accounts over for legal action once internal steps are exhausted.

• You keep your tone respectful even when the debtor is not
• Good with numbers, dates and payment calculations
• Clear credit and criminal record
• Target-driven and comfortable with commission
• At least 6 months in collections, sales or a call centre
• Registered, or willing to register, with the Council for Debt Collectors

• Uncapped monthly commission on collected rands
• Monthly incentives for the top three collectors
• Council for Debt Collectors registration paid for you

• Show your collection results as numbers (for example "collected R420 000 a month against a R350 000 target").
• Interviewers often role-play a difficult debtor; stay polite, get a date and an amount, and close the call.
