Domestic Helper (3 Days a Week)

Cleaning, laundry and a hand with the kids: that is the week in a retired couple's cottage in Benoni. It suits someone who likes knowing exactly what a good day's work looks like.

You'll be based at a retired couple's cottage in Benoni. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Hours are mostly Monday to Friday, with the odd Saturday in busy months.

• Help an elderly person with meals, medication reminders and light walking
• Wash, hang, iron and fold the household's laundry
• Change bed linen and make beds
• Dust furniture, ornaments and skirting boards
• Water indoor plants and feed pets
• Get children ready for school and supervise homework in the afternoon

• South African ID or valid work permit
• Able to speak and understand basic English
• Able to handle a full-day physical routine
• Good with children and patient
• Trustworthy, with references from previous employers you can share
• Willing to follow the family's house rules and routines

• Experience caring for an older person
• Non-smoker

• Written contract with fixed hours and duties
• Own room with bathroom for live-in posts
• Paid annual leave and public holidays as the law requires
• Registered for UIF and COIDA by the employer

• Families hire on trust, so make references your strongest part. Write the employer's name, suburb, years worked and phone number for each one.
• Say plainly what you can and cannot do: cooking, ironing, childcare, driving. It avoids arguments later and families like honesty.
