Excavator Operator (20-Ton, Bulk Earthworks)

You'll move earth, dig trenches and shape roads for the bulk earthworks contractor in Sasolburg. Bring a calm head on busy days and you'll be fine.

Location: Sasolburg, Free State. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. Hours are mostly Monday to Friday, with the odd Saturday in busy months.

• Backfill and compact around pipes in layers
• Dig trenches for pipes and cables to the depth and grade set by the surveyor
• Watch for underground services and follow the banksman's signals
• Do the pre-start checklist on your machine before the first bucket
• Compact layers with the roller until density tests pass

• Operator certificate for the machine class, from an accredited training provider
• Can read grade pegs and understand cut and fill
• Willing to work on projects outside your home town
• At least 2 years operating the machine on construction sites
• Medical certificate of fitness for operating mobile plant
• Valid Code 10 licence for moving machines on public roads

• Basic plant maintenance or mechanical knowledge
• GPS machine control experience on excavators or graders

• Overtime paid on all hours past 45 a week
• Refresher training on new machines
• Camp accommodation or a living-out allowance on remote sites
• Travel home paid at the end of each site shift cycle

• You will likely do a practical test on the machine. Do the walk-around check out loud. It shows you work safely.
• Put your operator certificate numbers on the CV. Site safety files need them before you start.
