Farm General Worker (Vegetable Fields)

Harvest time on a citrus farm near Krugersdorp means early mornings, full crates and paid overtime. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

Location: Krugersdorp, Gauteng. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. Weekend work is on a roster, so you won't be on every weekend.

• Clean and store picking bags, ladders and secateurs
• Prune and thin fruit trees and vines to the farm's method
• Pick fruit or vegetables at the right ripeness and size, gently
• Tie up tomato and pepper plants in tunnels
• Move irrigation pipes and check drippers for blockages
• Plant seedlings in rows at the spacing shown

• Physically fit for bending, lifting and climbing ladders
• Valid ID or work permit
• Follows farm hygiene and safety rules
• Careful with fruit, since bruised fruit is rejected
• Willing to start at sunrise

• Previous harvest or picking experience
• Tractor or quad bike experience

• Piece-rate bonus on top of daily wage
• Seasonal accommodation on some farms
• Farm transport from nearby towns
• Chance of a permanent post after good seasons

• Farms hire before the season starts, so apply four to six weeks early. Late arrivals often find the teams already full.
• If you have picked before, say which crop and how many seasons. Farms rehire experienced pickers first.
