Fitter (Underground Engineering)

When production stops, the artisans get it going again. The gold mine shaft complex near Bloemfontein needs you on that team. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

This post is Bloemfontein-based, with most of your time spent at a gold mine shaft complex. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Order spares and track them through the engineering store
• Isolate and lock out machines under the site isolation procedure
• Maintain pumps, fans and compressors in shafts and on surface
• Help with rope inspections and shaft maintenance during scheduled stoppages
• Fault-find hydraulic, electrical and engine faults on trackless machines
• Repair and align conveyor belt drives, pulleys and idlers
• Carry out planned maintenance on loaders, drill rigs and utility vehicles

• Certificate of fitness for underground or surface work
• At least 2 years as a qualified artisan, preferably on a mine
• N3 certificate or Grade 12 with maths and science
• Able to read schematics, hydraulic circuits or wiring diagrams

• Flameproof equipment training for coal mines
• Government Certificate of Competency studies in progress

• Tool allowance or company-issued toolbox
• Housing support in the mining town
• Study assistance for engineering qualifications
• Artisan allowance on top of basic pay

• Mention underground or flameproof experience clearly. It separates mine-ready artisans from factory artisans.
• Your trade test certificate must show the trade and the date. Keep a certified copy ready because mines verify it.
