Forestry Fire Crew Member (Winter Season)

You'll plant, prune and fell trees for a forestry contractor in the hills near Pretoria East. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

This post is Pretoria East-based, with most of your time spent at a forestry contractor. Start is planned for the beginning of next month.

• Prune lower branches with pruning saws and ladders
• Wear chainsaw chaps, helmets and ear protection at all times
• Plant seedlings in prepared pits at the right spacing
• Clear and maintain firebreaks during the dry season
• Feed logs into sawmill machines and stack planks
• Apply herbicide around young trees as instructed
• Sharpen and service chainsaws daily

• Valid ID
• Physically strong and fit for steep slopes
• Follows safety rules strictly around machines and fires
• Willing to work in remote areas
• Able to work in a crew and follow the crew leader
• Available for early starts and fire-season standby

• Fire fighting training
• Previous plantation or sawmill experience

• Chainsaw and fire training at no cost

• Mention fire fighting experience, even as a volunteer. Fire protection crews look for it before winter.
• Say you are fit and do not mind remote sites. Many applicants drop out after the first week, so recruiters test commitment.
