Forestry Team Supervisor (Silviculture) – Fixed-Term

Winter fire season is near, and a sawmill near Umlazi needs crews ready. If you like clear targets and knowing where you stand, this is for you.

Home base is a sawmill on the Umlazi side of KwaZulu-Natal. Hours are mostly Monday to Friday, with the odd Saturday in busy months.

• Stack logs by length for loading onto trucks
• Prune lower branches with pruning saws and ladders
• Apply herbicide around young trees as instructed
• Wear chainsaw chaps, helmets and ear protection at all times
• Sharpen and service chainsaws daily
• Fight veld fires with beaters and water packs under a crew leader

• Able to work in a crew and follow the crew leader
• Available for early starts and fire-season standby
• Physically strong and fit for steep slopes
• Valid ID
• Passes the medical check for fire crews
• Follows safety rules strictly around machines and fires

• Fire fighting training
• Chainsaw operator certificate
• First-aid training

• Say you are fit and do not mind remote sites. Many applicants drop out after the first week, so recruiters test commitment.
• Mention fire fighting experience, even as a volunteer. Fire protection crews look for it before winter.
