Forestry Worker (Plantation Planting)

You'll plant, prune and fell trees for a forestry contractor in the hills near Mthatha. If you like clear targets and knowing where you stand, this is for you.

This post is in Mthatha (Eastern Cape). Please only apply if you can travel there daily. Start date: as soon as possible for the right person.

• Feed logs into sawmill machines and stack planks
• Wear chainsaw chaps, helmets and ear protection at all times
• Fight veld fires with beaters and water packs under a crew leader
• Stack logs by length for loading onto trucks
• Fell, debranch and cross-cut trees with a chainsaw
• Prune lower branches with pruning saws and ladders

• Passes the medical check for fire crews
• Valid ID
• Follows safety rules strictly around machines and fires
• Willing to work in remote areas
• Able to work in a crew and follow the crew leader

• Fire fighting training
• First-aid training

• Chainsaw and fire training at no cost
• Full safety gear provided
• Crew transport to plantations
• Fire-season standby allowance

• Mention fire fighting experience, even as a volunteer. Fire protection crews look for it before winter.
• Say you are fit and do not mind remote sites. Many applicants drop out after the first week, so recruiters test commitment.
