Hospital Ward Cleaner – Entry Level

Careful, trained cleaners are wanted at a community health clinic in Atlantis. Good for someone who wants to build a solid track record they can put on their CV.

This post is Atlantis-based, with most of your time spent at a community health clinic. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

• Take soiled linen to the sluice room and bring clean linen back
• Move patients' belongings and equipment when rooms change
• Do terminal cleans of isolation rooms after a patient is discharged
• Wear gowns, masks and gloves as each room requires
• Mop spills of blood or fluids using the spill kit
• Disinfect bed rails, call bells and bedside lockers

• Willing to follow strict infection control steps every time
• Respectful and discreet around patients
• Calm under pressure in busy wards
• Up to date with vaccinations the hospital requires, such as hepatitis B
• Matric or Grade 11
• Not squeamish about blood, vomit or medical waste

• An infection prevention and control short course
• Experience as a porter or general assistant in healthcare

• Shift allowances for nights and Sundays
• On-the-job infection control training
• Meal on shift at the staff canteen

• In the interview, explain how you clean an isolation room step by step. It is a common question and a quick way to stand out.
• Mention any hospital, clinic or old-age home work first, even if it was short. Healthcare recruiters shortlist people who know ward routines.
