Hospital Ward Cleaner

You'll keep a frail care centre in Umlazi safe for patients by cleaning the way infection control demands. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

Location: Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. Weekend work is on a roster, so you won't be on every weekend.

• Disinfect bed rails, call bells and bedside lockers
• Mop spills of blood or fluids using the spill kit
• Handle and bag medical waste in the right coloured bins
• Clean patient rooms using colour-coded cloths and mops for each area
• Clean theatres between operations to the hospital's turnaround times
• Do terminal cleans of isolation rooms after a patient is discharged

• Willing to follow strict infection control steps every time
• Respectful and discreet around patients
• Calm under pressure in busy wards
• Able to work shifts including weekends and night duty
• Not squeamish about blood, vomit or medical waste

• An infection prevention and control short course
• Experience as a porter or general assistant in healthcare
• Previous hospital or clinic cleaning experience

• Medical aid option through the employer
• On-the-job infection control training
• Shift allowances for nights and Sundays

• Mention any hospital, clinic or old-age home work first, even if it was short. Healthcare recruiters shortlist people who know ward routines.
• If you did an infection control course, attach the certificate. It moves you ahead of general cleaners.
