Housekeeper and Cook (Family Home)

You'll keep a guesthouse with family quarters in Pinetown clean, calm and running smoothly for the family. This is a good step for someone who wants proper routine and a manager who notices good work.

You'll be based at a guesthouse with family quarters in Pinetown. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Help an elderly person with meals, medication reminders and light walking
• Wash dishes and keep the kitchen tidy after meals
• Prepare simple meals or school lunches when asked
• Dust furniture, ornaments and skirting boards
• Wash, hang, iron and fold the household's laundry

• Neat, organised and able to work without being supervised
• Trustworthy, with references from previous employers you can share
• Good with children and patient
• South African ID or valid work permit
• Able to speak and understand basic English
• Willing to follow the family's house rules and routines

• Basic first aid or child CPR course
• Non-smoker

• Written contract with fixed hours and duties
• Transport money for live-out staff
• Paid annual leave and public holidays as the law requires
• Registered for UIF and COIDA by the employer

• Families hire on trust, so make references your strongest part. Write the employer's name, suburb, years worked and phone number for each one.
• Ask for a written contract and to be registered for UIF. Good employers expect the question and it protects you.
