Maintenance Technician (Electro-Mechanical)

You'll keep machines turning and parts in spec at the sugar mill in East London. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

The site is in East London; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Program and run CNC machines from engineering drawings
• Record work and spares used on the job card or CMMS
• Align shafts with a laser alignment tool after every drive change
• Follow the lockout procedure before any work on machinery
• Maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems on production lines
• Help with electrical fault-finding on motors and sensors as a millwright
• Replace bearings, seals and couplings on pumps, gearboxes and motors

• Basic understanding of the General Machinery Regulations
• You read engineering drawings and measure with micrometers and verniers
• Willing to work shifts, standby and weekend shutdowns
• Own basic hand tools, or willing to build up a set

• Hydraulic and pneumatic courses
• CNC programming experience
• Forklift licence for moving heavy parts

• Chance to study further toward a technician diploma
• Tool allowance
• Paid overtime on shutdowns

• Write your trade and trade test year first, then the machines you know, like "Filling lines, pumps, gearboxes".
• If you can machine parts as well as fit them, say so clearly. Many factories want both skills in one person.
