Mechanical Fitter (Shutdowns)

You'll keep machines turning and parts in spec at the sugar mill in eMalahleni. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

This post is eMalahleni-based, with most of your time spent at a sugar mill.

• Replace bearings, seals and couplings on pumps, gearboxes and motors
• Machine shafts, bushes and keyways on a lathe and milling machine
• Follow the lockout procedure before any work on machinery
• Program and run CNC machines from engineering drawings
• Record work and spares used on the job card or CMMS
• Inspect and adjust conveyors, chains and sprockets

• You read engineering drawings and measure with micrometers and verniers
• N2 or N3 engineering subjects
• At least 2 years as a qualified artisan in a factory or workshop
• Trade test as Fitter and Turner, Fitter, Millwright or Toolmaker
• Own basic hand tools, or willing to build up a set
• Basic understanding of the General Machinery Regulations

• Food safety awareness for food and drink plants
• Forklift licence for moving heavy parts

• Paid overtime on shutdowns
• Chance to study further toward a technician diploma
• Tool allowance

• Expect a practical test. Measure twice and work cleanly, because the assessor watches your habits as much as the result.
• If you can machine parts as well as fit them, say so clearly. Many factories want both skills in one person.
