Mechanical Fitter (Shutdowns)

You'll keep machines turning and parts in spec at the packaging manufacturer in Kariega. Bring a calm head on busy days and you'll be fine.

You'll be based at a packaging manufacturer in Kariega. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Build and repair press tools, jigs and moulds
• Respond to breakdowns and get the line running again safely
• Inspect and adjust conveyors, chains and sprockets
• Maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems on production lines
• Machine shafts, bushes and keyways on a lathe and milling machine
• Help with electrical fault-finding on motors and sensors as a millwright
• Follow the lockout procedure before any work on machinery

• Own basic hand tools, or willing to build up a set
• Basic understanding of the General Machinery Regulations
• N2 or N3 engineering subjects
• Trade test as Fitter and Turner, Fitter, Millwright or Toolmaker

• Millwright trade test, since it covers both mechanical and electrical
• CNC programming experience
• Hydraulic and pneumatic courses

• Paid overtime on shutdowns
• Chance to study further toward a technician diploma
• Shift and standby allowances
• Tool allowance

• Expect a practical test. Measure twice and work cleanly, because the assessor watches your habits as much as the result.
• If you can machine parts as well as fit them, say so clearly. Many factories want both skills in one person.
