Mechanical Fitter (Shutdowns)

Bearings, gearboxes, pumps and lathes: this cement plant in Randburg needs your hands on them. It's a practical job: you'll see what you got done before you go home.

This post is Randburg-based, with most of your time spent at a cement plant. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

• Program and run CNC machines from engineering drawings
• Record work and spares used on the job card or CMMS
• Align shafts with a laser alignment tool after every drive change
• Help with electrical fault-finding on motors and sensors as a millwright
• Inspect and adjust conveyors, chains and sprockets

• Willing to work shifts, standby and weekend shutdowns
• Basic understanding of the General Machinery Regulations
• Own basic hand tools, or willing to build up a set
• N2 or N3 engineering subjects

• Food safety awareness for food and drink plants
• Millwright trade test, since it covers both mechanical and electrical

• Chance to study further toward a technician diploma
• Paid overtime on shutdowns
• Shift and standby allowances
• Tool allowance

• Expect a practical test. Measure twice and work cleanly, because the assessor watches your habits as much as the result.
• Write your trade and trade test year first, then the machines you know, like "Filling lines, pumps, gearboxes".
