Nursery Worker (Seedlings)

Crops do not wait, and a deciduous fruit orchard near Somerset West needs extra hands this season. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

This post is Somerset West-based, with most of your time spent at a deciduous fruit orchard. There's a probation period of three months before the contract is confirmed.

• Clean and store picking bags, ladders and secateurs
• Tie up tomato and pepper plants in tunnels
• Follow the re-entry times after spraying, as the signs show
• Pick fruit or vegetables at the right ripeness and size, gently
• Plant seedlings in rows at the spacing shown

• Follows farm hygiene and safety rules
• Willing to start at sunrise
• Able to work outdoors in heat, cold and rain
• Careful with fruit, since bruised fruit is rejected
• Physically fit for bending, lifting and climbing ladders
• Available for the full harvest season

• Previous harvest or picking experience
• Living on or near the farm

• Seasonal accommodation on some farms
• Piece-rate bonus on top of daily wage
• Farm transport from nearby towns
• Chance of a permanent post after good seasons

• Have your bank details ready. Most farms pay into a bank account and will not start you without it.
• If you have picked before, say which crop and how many seasons. Farms rehire experienced pickers first.
