Occupational Hygiene Officer (Mine)

Plan inspections, lead investigations and build a safer shift culture at the open-pit coal mine near Kathu. Good for someone who wants to build a solid track record they can put on their CV.

This post is Kathu-based, with most of your time spent at an open-pit coal mine. Overtime comes up in peak season and is paid.

• Keep legal appointments and code of practice records current
• Inspect workplaces underground and on surface against the MHSA and the mine's standards
• Lead incident investigations using a root cause method
• Help run emergency drills and check refuge bays
• Prepare for inspections by the mine inspector and follow up on instructions
• Check that crews do planned task observations and pre-shift checks
• Review baseline and issue-based risk assessments with section managers

• Code 08 licence for moving around the mine property
• At least 3 years in a safety role at a mine
• Confident writing investigation reports and presenting findings
• Registered with SAIOSH, or working toward it
• SAMTRAC or an MQA-accredited mine safety qualification

• Occupational hygiene registration with the relevant council
• Mine rescue training

• Standby allowance for incident call-outs
• Company vehicle on site
• CPD and further study funded
• Retirement fund and medical aid

• Mention the commodity and whether you worked underground. Mines prefer someone who knows their hazards.
• Give numbers: how many investigations you led, or how the LTIFR changed in your section.
