Occupational Hygiene Officer (Mine)

You'll make safety real on the ground at the open-pit coal mine near White River, not just on paper. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

The site is in White River; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Check that crews do planned task observations and pre-shift checks
• Prepare for inspections by the mine inspector and follow up on instructions
• Inspect workplaces underground and on surface against the MHSA and the mine's standards
• Keep legal appointments and code of practice records current
• Lead incident investigations using a root cause method
• Take dust, noise and heat measurements with the occupational hygiene team

• Code 08 licence for moving around the mine property
• SAMTRAC or an MQA-accredited mine safety qualification
• Certificate of fitness to go underground or into the pit
• Confident writing investigation reports and presenting findings
• Registered with SAIOSH, or working toward it
• Detailed knowledge of the MHSA and its regulations

• Diploma or degree in Safety Management or Environmental Health
• ISO 45001 auditing experience

• Company vehicle on site

• Give numbers: how many investigations you led, or how the LTIFR changed in your section.
• Mention the commodity and whether you worked underground. Mines prefer someone who knows their hazards.
