The low-cost housing project in Randburg needs skilled hands and helpers who know the basics of the building trade. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

You'll be based at a low-cost housing project in Randburg. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps.

• Mix mortar and plaster to the right ratio for the job
• Lay paving on a compacted, levelled bedding sand layer
• Clean your tools and sweep your work area before knocking off
• Cut, bend and tie reinforcing steel to the bending schedule
• Plaster walls and float them to a smooth, even finish
• Wear your hard hat, boots and harness wherever the foreman says

• Able to follow a foreman's instructions and read basic measurements
• Understands basic site safety like scaffolds and open trenches
• Willing to move between sites in the same city
• Punctual every morning, even in winter
• Safety boots of your own for the first week, if possible
• Physically strong enough for a full day of lifting and bending outside

• CETA or NQF 2 or 3 certificate in your trade
• Trade test in bricklaying, carpentry or plastering
• Your own trowels, levels and tile cutter

• Transport from a pick-up point to site
• PPE supplied: hard hat, gloves, reflective vest
• UIF and COIDA registration from day one
• Weekly or fortnightly pay, always on time

• Bring photos of your work on your phone. A foreman believes a straight wall more than a long CV.
• Say which trade you are strongest in first. "Bricklayer, 6 years, face brick" is better than "general construction".
