Painter's Assistant (Renovations) – Entry Level

Strong, willing hands are wanted on a school building project in Welkom. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

Location: Welkom, Free State. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. Hours are mostly Monday to Friday, with the odd Saturday in busy months.

• Compact soil and layer bedding sand with a plate compactor
• Set up barriers, cones and signs around open trenches
• Pass tools and materials to the plumber or electrician as needed
• Help offload deliveries of steel, timber and pipes
• Erect and strip shutters and simple scaffolding under supervision
• Dig trenches and foundations to the depth the foreman marks
• Clear rubble and load it into skips

• A clean record is preferred for some government sites
• Willing to start early, often at 06:30
• You take safety rules seriously and wear full PPE
• Physically strong and fit for outdoor work in all weather
• Able to follow instructions from a foreman or artisan

• Registered on your ward or municipal job-seeker database
• Living near the site (many projects hire local labour)
• A working-at-heights or scaffolding ticket

• Paid weekly or fortnightly
• Learn from artisans with a chance to move up to assistant
• Overtime on weekend pours and deadline days
• Boots, hard hat and overalls issued on site

• Government-funded projects often reserve jobs for people from the local ward. Bring proof of address and ask the site office about the local labour desk.
• If a foreman can vouch for you, put their number on your CV. Site hiring runs on word of mouth.
