Paving Layer (Interlocking Pavers)

You'll build it with your hands: walls, floors, roofs and finishes on the housing development site in eMalahleni. Someone who likes a bit of variety, but also likes doing things the right way, will enjoy this.

This post is in eMalahleni (Mpumalanga). Please only apply if you can travel there daily. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Carry bricks and materials to the workface and keep the scaffold clear
• Cut, bend and tie reinforcing steel to the bending schedule
• Fix roof trusses, purlins and brandering for ceilings
• Plaster walls and float them to a smooth, even finish
• Lay paving on a compacted, levelled bedding sand layer
• Mix mortar and plaster to the right ratio for the job
• Tile floors, showers and splashbacks, including cutting around fittings

• Understands basic site safety like scaffolds and open trenches
• Physically strong enough for a full day of lifting and bending outside
• Able to follow a foreman's instructions and read basic measurements
• Safety boots of your own for the first week, if possible
• Willing to move between sites in the same city

• Your own trowels, levels and tile cutter
• Trade test in bricklaying, carpentry or plastering
• CETA or NQF 2 or 3 certificate in your trade

• Transport from a pick-up point to site
• PPE supplied: hard hat, gloves, reflective vest
• UIF and COIDA registration from day one
• Chance to move up to a gang leader post

• Bring photos of your work on your phone. A foreman believes a straight wall more than a long CV.
• Say which trade you are strongest in first. "Bricklayer, 6 years, face brick" is better than "general construction".
