Paving Team Labourer

Hard outdoor work on a school building project in Pinetown, with a chance to learn a trade while you earn. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

The work is in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, so you'll need a reliable way to get there every day. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Clear rubble and load it into skips
• Cut and lay paving bricks along string lines
• Sign the daily safety talk register before work starts
• Clean tools, mixers and wheelbarrows at the end of each day
• Compact soil and layer bedding sand with a plate compactor
• Mix concrete and mortar by hand or with a small mixer
• Dig trenches and foundations to the depth the foreman marks

• Willing to start early, often at 06:30
• Able to follow instructions from a foreman or artisan
• Prepared to travel between sites in the area
• Physically strong and fit for outdoor work in all weather

• Some experience with a jackhammer, grinder or plate compactor
• A working-at-heights or scaffolding ticket

• Paid weekly or fortnightly
• Overtime on weekend pours and deadline days
• Learn from artisans with a chance to move up to assistant

• List past sites by name and what you did there, like "mixed concrete, laid kerbs". It proves you have done real site work.
• If a foreman can vouch for you, put their number on your CV. Site hiring runs on word of mouth.
