Job Description

Here you help people wash, eat, move and heal, at a retirement village frail care centre in Durban Central. This is a good step for someone who wants proper routine and a manager who notices good work.

You'll report in Durban Central. Relocation is not covered for this one. Hours are mostly Monday to Friday, with the odd Saturday in busy months.

What your day looks like

  • Follow infection control rules, including hand hygiene and safe sharps disposal
  • Turn bed-bound patients on schedule and check pressure areas for early sores
  • Help patients bath, dress, eat and use the toilet with dignity
  • Help patients walk, transfer from bed to chair and do their exercises
  • Take and chart temperature, pulse, blood pressure and blood glucose
  • Keep the fluid and food intake charts accurate for every patient
  • Do simple wound dressings and report anything that looks infected

You'll need

  • Able to work shifts, including nights and weekends
  • Matric or NQF Level 4 equivalent
  • Patient and gentle with elderly, frail or confused people
  • Accredited home-based care or ancillary health care certificate for caregiver posts
  • SANC enrolment as an Enrolled Nurse or Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary for nursing posts
  • Physically strong enough to lift and move patients safely

Helpful, not essential

  • Code B or Code 8 driver's licence for home visits
  • Dementia care or palliative care short course

What you get

  • Overtime paid at time and a half
  • Meals provided on shift at many frail care centres
  • Uniform supplied
  • Paid training in dementia and end-of-life care

Applying, step by step

  1. Check you meet the must-haves first; recruiters filter on those before anything else.
  2. Have the following on hand (clear photos on your phone are fine at first): two references from previous care jobs plus first aid or BLS certificate.
  3. Use the form on this page. It takes about two minutes and you don't need to upload anything yet.
  4. If you're shortlisted you'll hear from us within 7 working days, usually by phone.

Tips to get shortlisted

  • If you're a caregiver, attach the certificate from the training provider, not just a letter saying you attended.
  • Recruiters phone references for care jobs, so warn your references and check their numbers still work.
