Professional Nurse (Maternity and Labour Ward) – Permanent

You'll run patient care on a busy shift at a private hospital surgical ward in Polokwane, from admission to discharge. If you turn up on time and finish what you start, you'll fit in quickly.

You'll be based at a private hospital surgical ward in Polokwane. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Take part in ward rounds with doctors and record the new orders
• Monitor vital signs, fluid balance and early warning scores, and escalate changes quickly
• Prepare patients for theatre and receive them back from recovery
• Take handover at the bedside and plan care for your allocated patients
• Give scheduled medication, including Schedule 5 and 6 drugs, and sign the register
• Report adverse events and near misses on the incident system the same day

• Solid knowledge of medication safety and the Nursing Act scope of practice
• Calm under pressure when a patient's condition turns quickly
• Valid BLS certificate; ACLS or PALS for ICU and emergency posts
• Nursing qualification via the R425 diploma or R174 degree route
• Clean criminal record
• At least 1 year of post-community-service ward experience

• IMCI and NIMART training for primary health care work
• Experience with electronic patient records or bedside charting systems

• Night-shift and weekend allowances on top of basic pay
• Medical aid and pension fund contributions after probation
• Study support for post-basic specialities
