Job Description

You'll run patient care on a busy shift at a private maternity unit in Cape Town CBD, from admission to discharge. Bring a calm head on busy days and you'll be fine.

You'll be based at a private maternity unit in Cape Town CBD. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

The work, day to day

  • Give scheduled medication, including Schedule 5 and 6 drugs, and sign the register
  • Keep clinical notes clear, timed and signed for audits and legal records
  • Monitor vital signs, fluid balance and early warning scores, and escalate changes quickly
  • Do wound care, catheter care and IV line management to unit protocol
  • Do full patient assessments and update nursing care plans every shift
  • Admit and discharge patients and explain medication and follow-up to families

What you need

  • At least 1 year of post-community-service ward experience
  • Current SANC registration as a Professional Nurse, with this year's annual fees paid
  • Clean criminal record
  • You can work 12-hour day or night shifts, weekends and public holidays
  • Valid BLS certificate; ACLS or PALS for ICU and emergency posts
  • Nursing qualification via the R425 diploma or R174 degree route

Helpful, not essential

  • IMCI and NIMART training for primary health care work
  • Dispensing licence (Section 22A(15)) for clinic posts
  • Experience with electronic patient records or bedside charting systems

On offer

  • Study support for post-basic specialities
  • Paid SANC annual fees at some groups
  • Medical aid and pension fund contributions after probation
  • Night-shift and weekend allowances on top of basic pay

How to apply

  1. Make sure the role, the hours and working in Cape Town CBD really suit you before you apply.
  2. Keep copies of these ready to send: current BLS or ACLS card, contact details for a ward or unit manager who supervised you plus certified copies of your nursing qualification and ID.
  3. Fill in the short form below with your name and a phone number you actually answer.
  4. If you're shortlisted you'll hear from us within 9 working days, usually by phone.

How2Apply recruits for this position on behalf of hiring employers around Cape Town CBD; applications go into our talent pool and shortlisted candidates are introduced directly.

How2Apply never charges you to apply, for training, for uniforms or for a "placement fee". If anyone asks you for money, it is a scam.

How to stand out

  • For night-duty posts, say clearly in your cover note that you want permanent nights, as many applicants only want days.
  • List your speciality skills in plain words, such as "ventilated patients" or "normal deliveries", instead of just the ward name.
