Professional Nurse (Theatre)

This is a registered nursing post at a provincial district hospital in Montague Gardens, with your own patient load and a say in the care plan. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

Home base is a provincial district hospital on the Montague Gardens side of Western Cape. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Supervise enrolled nurses and nursing assistants on your side of the ward
• Prepare patients for theatre and receive them back from recovery
• Do full patient assessments and update nursing care plans every shift
• Monitor vital signs, fluid balance and early warning scores, and escalate changes quickly
• Report adverse events and near misses on the incident system the same day
• Do wound care, catheter care and IV line management to unit protocol
• Take part in ward rounds with doctors and record the new orders

• Current SANC registration as a Professional Nurse, with this year's annual fees paid
• Nursing qualification via the R425 diploma or R174 degree route
• Clean criminal record
• Calm under pressure when a patient's condition turns quickly

• Dispensing licence (Section 22A(15)) for clinic posts
• IMCI and NIMART training for primary health care work
• Unit manager or shift leader experience

• Night-shift and weekend allowances on top of basic pay
• Paid SANC annual fees at some groups
• Funded CPD points and in-house clinical training
• Study support for post-basic specialities

• For night-duty posts, say clearly in your cover note that you want permanent nights, as many applicants only want days.
• Check your SANC receipt is for this year before you apply; an unpaid annual fee gets your application parked.
