Pruning and Thinning Crew Worker

You'll plant, prune and fell trees for a pine plantation in the hills near Tzaneen. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

You'll be based at a pine plantation in Tzaneen. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Start date: as soon as possible for the right person.

• Feed logs into sawmill machines and stack planks
• Clear and maintain firebreaks during the dry season
• Sharpen and service chainsaws daily
• Apply herbicide around young trees as instructed
• Fight veld fires with beaters and water packs under a crew leader

• Physically strong and fit for steep slopes
• Follows safety rules strictly around machines and fires
• Able to work in a crew and follow the crew leader
• Valid ID
• Willing to work in remote areas
• Passes the medical check for fire crews

• First-aid training
• Fire fighting training
• Chainsaw operator certificate

• Crew transport to plantations
• Fire-season standby allowance
• Full safety gear provided

• If you have a chainsaw ticket, put it at the top. Certified operators earn more and are hired first.
• Say you are fit and do not mind remote sites. Many applicants drop out after the first week, so recruiters test commitment.
