Job Description

This is a registered nursing post at a private hospital surgical ward in Bellville, with your own patient load and a say in the care plan. This is a good step for someone who wants proper routine and a manager who notices good work.

This post is Bellville-based, with most of your time spent at a private hospital surgical ward. Start date: as soon as possible for the right person.

What you'll actually do

  • Supervise enrolled nurses and nursing assistants on your side of the ward
  • Do wound care, catheter care and IV line management to unit protocol
  • Admit and discharge patients and explain medication and follow-up to families
  • Take handover at the bedside and plan care for your allocated patients
  • Give scheduled medication, including Schedule 5 and 6 drugs, and sign the register
  • Monitor vital signs, fluid balance and early warning scores, and escalate changes quickly
  • Take part in ward rounds with doctors and record the new orders

Must-haves

  • At least 1 year of post-community-service ward experience
  • Clean criminal record
  • Valid BLS certificate; ACLS or PALS for ICU and emergency posts
  • You can work 12-hour day or night shifts, weekends and public holidays
  • Current SANC registration as a Professional Nurse, with this year's annual fees paid
  • Solid knowledge of medication safety and the Nursing Act scope of practice

Helpful, not essential

  • Experience with electronic patient records or bedside charting systems
  • Dispensing licence (Section 22A(15)) for clinic posts

What's in it for you

  • Paid SANC annual fees at some groups
  • Funded CPD points and in-house clinical training
  • Study support for post-basic specialities

How to apply

  1. Read the "What you need" list above. If you tick most of it, go ahead and apply.
  2. Have the following on hand (clear photos on your phone are fine at first): contact details for a ward or unit manager who supervised you, certified copy of your SANC registration and current annual practising certificate plus certified copies of your nursing qualification and ID.
  3. Fill in the short form below with your name and a phone number you actually answer.
  4. If you're shortlisted you'll hear from us within 8 working days, usually by phone.

Tips to get shortlisted

  • List your speciality skills in plain words, such as "ventilated patients" or "normal deliveries", instead of just the ward name.
  • Put your SANC number and the units you've worked in at the very top of your CV; recruiters filter on these first.
