Registered Nurse (Emergency Unit)

This is a registered nursing post at a provincial district hospital in East London, with your own patient load and a say in the care plan. Someone who likes a bit of variety, but also likes doing things the right way, will enjoy this.

Home base is a provincial district hospital on the East London side of Eastern Cape.

• Take handover at the bedside and plan care for your allocated patients
• Take part in ward rounds with doctors and record the new orders
• Prepare patients for theatre and receive them back from recovery
• Do full patient assessments and update nursing care plans every shift
• Run emergency trolley checks and respond to cardiac arrest calls
• Monitor vital signs, fluid balance and early warning scores, and escalate changes quickly
• Do wound care, catheter care and IV line management to unit protocol

• Current SANC registration as a Professional Nurse, with this year's annual fees paid
• Solid knowledge of medication safety and the Nursing Act scope of practice
• You can work 12-hour day or night shifts, weekends and public holidays
• Valid BLS certificate; ACLS or PALS for ICU and emergency posts
• Nursing qualification via the R425 diploma or R174 degree route
• Calm under pressure when a patient's condition turns quickly

• Unit manager or shift leader experience
• Experience with electronic patient records or bedside charting systems

• Medical aid and pension fund contributions after probation
• Study support for post-basic specialities
• Funded CPD points and in-house clinical training

• List your speciality skills in plain words, such as "ventilated patients" or "normal deliveries", instead of just the ward name.
• Put your SANC number and the units you've worked in at the very top of your CV; recruiters filter on these first.
