Rigger (Shaft & Headgear)

This coal mine engineering workshop near Harrismith needs a trade-tested artisan who is safe, quick and thorough on breakdowns. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

Location: Harrismith, Free State. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first.

• Carry out planned maintenance on loaders, drill rigs and utility vehicles
• Repair and align conveyor belt drives, pulleys and idlers
• Order spares and track them through the engineering store
• Take part in weekend shutdowns for major overhauls
• Maintain pumps, fans and compressors in shafts and on surface

• Trade test certificate in your trade (diesel mechanic, fitter, electrician, boilermaker, instrumentation or rigger)
• Willing to do standby and call-outs on a roster
• At least 2 years as a qualified artisan, preferably on a mine
• Understands MHSA duties for artisans, including lockout and permits
• N3 certificate or Grade 12 with maths and science
• Certificate of fitness for underground or surface work

• Artisan allowance on top of basic pay
• Tool allowance or company-issued toolbox
• Study assistance for engineering qualifications
• Housing support in the mining town

• State your trade and the machines or equipment you know best, for example "fitter: conveyors, crushers and pumps".
• Mention underground or flameproof experience clearly. It separates mine-ready artisans from factory artisans.
