Safety and Risk Officer (Coal Mining) – Immediate Start

You'll make safety real on the ground at the open-pit coal mine near Isando, not just on paper. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

This post is Isando-based, with most of your time spent at an open-pit coal mine. Hours are mostly Monday to Friday, with the odd Saturday in busy months.

• Review baseline and issue-based risk assessments with section managers
• Take dust, noise and heat measurements with the occupational hygiene team
• Track safety statistics like LTIFR and report them each month
• Train safety representatives and support the health and safety committee
• Check that crews do planned task observations and pre-shift checks
• Inspect workplaces underground and on surface against the MHSA and the mine's standards
• Keep legal appointments and code of practice records current

• Detailed knowledge of the MHSA and its regulations
• Certificate of fitness to go underground or into the pit
• Confident writing investigation reports and presenting findings
• SAMTRAC or an MQA-accredited mine safety qualification
• Code 08 licence for moving around the mine property
• Registered with SAIOSH, or working toward it

• Retirement fund and medical aid
• CPD and further study funded
• Company vehicle on site

• Mention the commodity and whether you worked underground. Mines prefer someone who knows their hazards.
• Show your mining sector safety experience clearly. Construction-only safety CVs are often moved to the no pile.
