Safety Officer (Open Pit Operations)

You'll make safety real on the ground at the gold tailings retreatment operation near Bloemfontein, not just on paper. You'll work with a small crew, so being easy to work with matters as much as skill.

Home base is a gold tailings retreatment operation on the Bloemfontein side of Free State. There's a probation period of three months before the contract is confirmed.

• Take dust, noise and heat measurements with the occupational hygiene team
• Check that crews do planned task observations and pre-shift checks
• Review baseline and issue-based risk assessments with section managers
• Keep legal appointments and code of practice records current
• Help run emergency drills and check refuge bays
• Prepare for inspections by the mine inspector and follow up on instructions

• Certificate of fitness to go underground or into the pit
• Confident writing investigation reports and presenting findings
• SAMTRAC or an MQA-accredited mine safety qualification
• Code 08 licence for moving around the mine property
• Registered with SAIOSH, or working toward it

• Occupational hygiene registration with the relevant council
• ISO 45001 auditing experience

• Retirement fund and medical aid
• Standby allowance for incident call-outs
• CPD and further study funded

• Give numbers: how many investigations you led, or how the LTIFR changed in your section.
• Mention the commodity and whether you worked underground. Mines prefer someone who knows their hazards.
