Job Description

Winter fire season is near, and a fire protection association near Isando needs crews ready. It suits someone who likes knowing exactly what a good day's work looks like.

Location: Isando, Gauteng. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

What you'll actually do

Plant seedlings in prepared pits at the right spacing
Clear and maintain firebreaks during the dry season
Prune lower branches with pruning saws and ladders
Apply herbicide around young trees as instructed
Stack logs by length for loading onto trucks
Feed logs into sawmill machines and stack planks
Wear chainsaw chaps, helmets and ear protection at all times

Must-haves

Passes the medical check for fire crews
Follows safety rules strictly around machines and fires
Available for early starts and fire-season standby
Able to work in a crew and follow the crew leader
Physically strong and fit for steep slopes
Willing to work in remote areas

Nice if you have

Chainsaw operator certificate
Fire fighting training
Previous plantation or sawmill experience
