Shift Supervisor (Underground Coal) – Permanent

This deep-level gold mine near Klerksdorp needs a miner who makes every workplace safe before a single hole is drilled. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

Location: Klerksdorp, North West. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Do the early entry examination and make the workplace safe before the crew enters
• Charge up holes and connect initiation systems for the blast
• Hold a start-of-shift safety talk and deal with any unsafe condition
• Test for flammable gas and check ventilation before and after blasting
• Bar down loose rock and install support to the section's support standard
• Book explosives in and out of the magazine and keep the register accurate
• Record face advance, tons broken and support installed on the shift report

• At least 3 years underground, with at least 1 as a certificated miner
• No serious safety transgressions in your record
• Certificate of fitness from the mine medical station, including heat tolerance screening where required
• Able to lead a crew of 8 to 20 people in a language they understand
• Grade 12 or equivalent, plus the MQA-accredited miner training
• Valid blasting certificate issued under the Mine Health and Safety Act

• Rock engineering or ventilation short courses
• Shift Supervisor certificate or Mine Overseer learning

• Medical aid and mine medical station access
• Pension fund with employer contributions
• Housing or living-out allowance
• Production bonus based on metres or square metres achieved

• Write your blasting certificate number and date of issue near the top of the CV.
• Be honest about any section 54 stoppages you were involved in and what you changed after.
