Shift Supervisor (Underground Coal) – Permanent

Underground, the miner sets the pace and the safety standard. This chrome and manganese mine near Potchefstroom needs that person. If you turn up on time and finish what you start, you'll fit in quickly.

Location: Potchefstroom, North West. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Hold a start-of-shift safety talk and deal with any unsafe condition
• Do the early entry examination and make the workplace safe before the crew enters
• Bar down loose rock and install support to the section's support standard
• Charge up holes and connect initiation systems for the blast
• Stop work when a condition is unsafe, using your right to withdraw
• Mark off drilling holes to the standard pattern and check the drilling
• Book explosives in and out of the magazine and keep the register accurate

• Able to lead a crew of 8 to 20 people in a language they understand
• Certificate of fitness from the mine medical station, including heat tolerance screening where required
• Grade 12 or equivalent, plus the MQA-accredited miner training
• Sound knowledge of your commodity's mining method and support standards
• At least 3 years underground, with at least 1 as a certificated miner
• No serious safety transgressions in your record

• First aid certificate current
• Experience in trackless mechanised sections

• Mines check your safety record with previous employers. Mention any safety awards or zero-harm periods your crew achieved.
• Be honest about any section 54 stoppages you were involved in and what you changed after.
