Job Description

This is hands-on electrical work in Durban Central: new installs, repairs and CoCs that pass the first time. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

You'll be based at a residential electrical contractor in Durban Central. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Hours are mostly Monday to Friday, with the odd Saturday in busy months.

What your day looks like

Replace faulty light fittings, plugs, geyser elements and thermostats
Fault-find tripping circuits with a multimeter, insulation tester and loop tester
Read electrical layouts and mark out point positions before chasing walls
Install inverters, battery banks and changeover switches for backup power clients
Run conduit, trunking and cable tray on new builds and renovations
Install and wire distribution boards, isolators and earth leakage units to SANS 10142-1
Supervise and teach an electrical assistant or apprentice on site

You'll need

Valid Code 08 driver's licence
Registered with the Department of Employment and Labour as an Installation Electrician or holding a Wireman's licence
Clean criminal record, since you will work inside client homes
Electrical trade test certificate (Section 13 or 26D) through a QCTO-accredited centre
Solid working knowledge of SANS 10142-1 and the Electrical Installation Regulations
Comfortable working at heights on ladders and in roof spaces

Nice if you have

Master Installation Electrician registration for three-phase CoCs
N3 electrical trade theory on top of your trade test
Working at Heights certificate still in date
