Steel Fixer (Reinforcing) – Entry Level

Good, straight work gets noticed on this low-cost housing project in Bethlehem, and so does turning up every day. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

This post is Bethlehem-based, with most of your time spent at a low-cost housing project. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

• Mix mortar and plaster to the right ratio for the job
• Cut, bend and tie reinforcing steel to the bending schedule
• Carry bricks and materials to the workface and keep the scaffold clear
• Clean your tools and sweep your work area before knocking off
• Lay face brick and plaster brick to line, level and plumb

• Physically strong enough for a full day of lifting and bending outside
• Punctual every morning, even in winter
• Understands basic site safety like scaffolds and open trenches
• Safety boots of your own for the first week, if possible
• Able to follow a foreman's instructions and read basic measurements
• Proven experience in at least one trade, shown by references or a practical test

• Experience on NHBRC-registered housing projects
• CETA or NQF 2 or 3 certificate in your trade
• Trade test in bricklaying, carpentry or plastering

• PPE supplied: hard hat, gloves, reflective vest
• Chance to move up to a gang leader post
• Transport from a pick-up point to site
• Weekly or fortnightly pay, always on time

• Bring photos of your work on your phone. A foreman believes a straight wall more than a long CV.
• Say which trade you are strongest in first. "Bricklayer, 6 years, face brick" is better than "general construction".
