Timber Loader and Stacker

Hard, outdoor work on a sawmill near Montague Gardens, with training on chainsaws and fire safety. Someone who likes a bit of variety, but also likes doing things the right way, will enjoy this.

Location: Montague Gardens, Western Cape. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Feed logs into sawmill machines and stack planks
• Plant seedlings in prepared pits at the right spacing
• Apply herbicide around young trees as instructed
• Clear and maintain firebreaks during the dry season
• Fell, debranch and cross-cut trees with a chainsaw

• Able to work in a crew and follow the crew leader
• Passes the medical check for fire crews
• Follows safety rules strictly around machines and fires
• Physically strong and fit for steep slopes

• Chainsaw operator certificate
• Previous plantation or sawmill experience

• Full safety gear provided
• Chainsaw and fire training at no cost
• Fire-season standby allowance
• Crew transport to plantations

• Mention fire fighting experience, even as a volunteer. Fire protection crews look for it before winter.
• If you have a chainsaw ticket, put it at the top. Certified operators earn more and are hired first.
